One of my favorite meditations is reading the book Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It just centers me. Since 1995, It has been part of my life. It is a book that you read a new page for each day of the year. Her approach is about life having simple pleasures away from commercialism and the hustle bustle. We take for granted the simple things but then walk around in life like we haven’t reached success. When in fact those very simple things in total give us the abundance to sustain happiness and family, community and growth.
One of her philosophies for today is my favorite. I even have it printed and taped inside one of my kitchen cabinets to remind me to not sweat the small stuff and to be grateful for the process that takes me from gratitude to joy.
Sarah says “Gratitude gives way to simplicity. Simplicity brings with it order. A sense of order in our life brings us harmony. Harmony provides us with the inner peace we need to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us each day, and beauty opens us to joy.”
I am so grateful for my family, my friends, for sunsets, for my boyfriend. I am so thankful for new chances each day to do better, to grow, to learn and to love. I revel in children with innocent but brilliant thoughts. I love that quiet moment drinking my hot tea that my love makes me each evening. I feel so content when I know I worked hard and see that others were helped to feel better, happy and even pay it forward.
Don’t get me wrong, I still dream of a big house to entertain, a pretty car that doesn’t have paint peeling or the crack in my window or the window on the driver’s side that I can’t roll down but only roll up. I still dream of clothes that make me feel stylish but on a body that is about six sizes smaller than I currently am. I still dream of vacations to see the world and other cultures, landmarks and take me away from sadness and the mundane.
But when I think of Simple Abundance, I truly have all that I need. LOVE.
